Amazon, Apple, Ali Baba, Shopify, TradeMe, eBay are all too familiar brands when it comes to shopping. The move toward eCommerce aka online business aka online shopping is changing the world and the way consumers behave.
NZ Post is shifting their business model to focus on delivering packages from online orders, in 2017-18 they reported: “eCommerce is providing NZ Post significant opportunities and record volumes, as this year we delivered 77 million parcels for customers.” (nzpost.co.nz) Amazon is using drones to deliver packages in the USA. By 2023 retail eCommerce sales are expected to hit $6.5trillion USD globally (statista.com)
eCommerce also opens up global opportunities for entrepreneurs. Where social influencers have incredible brand power, and hundreds of thousands of units can be sold to consumers across the world in minutes. One of the strengths we see for young people is the ability to build a community and 'find their tribe' of like-minded consumers in order to build a business, whether it's for money, for a purpose, or to build a movement!
Young people and eCommerce go together like potato and gravy, like cheese and wine, like Bert and Ernie, like the All Blacks and the Web Ellis Cup. They are a perfect match! eCommerce is online, global, scalable and second nature to the digital native, social media savvy, consumer-driven and fast-moving younger generation.
So we have partnered with our friends at Princes Trust NZ (PTNZ) and Shopify to offer a 2 day workshop for 18-30 year olds who are keen on giving it a crack for themselves, and setup an online business. Read the details from our friends below, and register to get your spot!
Mahi Tahi: Developing Young Entrepreneurs Collaboratively
by Jenna Lovegrove and Rod Baxter
A partnership between Ngahere Communities, Shopify Inc. and The Prince’s Trust New Zealand (PTNZ) has joined our collective superpowers to pilot a new enterprise programme, with a focus on e-commerce.
The teams from these three organisations will prototype and test an Aotearoa-adapted version of The Prince’s Trust’s global ‘Enterprise’ initiative in our unique cultural, social, and economic context with young people in South Auckland. We’re aiming high and hoping that the programme will be pivotal in empowering young New Zealanders to generate meaningful and personalised income streams; ‘make a living’ (in the broadest sense); and own their contribution to a thriving local economy. We hope to provide a recognised platform of business knowledge, access to and learnings from one of the world’s largest e-commerce organisations; and locally, contact and connection with like-minded creators, innovators and entrepreneurs.
We will support a dozen 18-30 year olds who are interested in enterprising mind-sets and entrepreneurship – and to provide training, mentoring and finance:
Training: an intensive and immersive short course infusing technical skills with design thinking and, most importantly, a relationship to Te Ao Pakihi
Mentoring: a network of experienced business experts to voluntarily offer both long-term one-on-one support and short-burst specialist advice
Finance: we will offer seed grants to participants who are ready to launch their business idea.
If you have a business idea you’d like to explore, or are interested in learning about e-commerce, or just happen to be interested in participating in the pilot of the ‘Enterprise’ training programme, please register your interest here.
We’re piloting our workshop prototype in Manukau on Wednesday 6 – Thursday 7 November 2019, facilitated in our active partnership with all three partners.
